Deli item thrown by protester allegedly exploded and created mustard stain on immigration officer, legal proceedings reveal
A American border officer has stated under oath he could feel through his protective gear the force of a deli item launched at him by a Washington DC protester, who has stood before a judge for assault.
Customs and Border Patrol agent Gregory Lairmore informed the court panel the food item "burst all over him" and he "detected the onions and condiment" on his official attire.
Both legal teams contests that the defendant, in his thirties, did in fact throw profanities and a deli-style sandwich at authorities deployed by President Donald Trump to monitor the Washington DC in August.
The incident was captured on recording and became popular online, making the accused a figure of dissent in the capital to the administration.
State lawyers initially tried to secure major offense allegations against the defendant, but a grand jury chose not to charge him.
Trump's sending of military personnel to the capital this summer generated outrage from some of the DC citizens, who saw it as a partisan deployment of the military.
Based on charging documents, Mr Dunn walked up to a police contingent at about late evening on the summer date, referring to them "authoritarians" and shouting: "What is your purpose? I don't want you in my city!"
The court witnessed a re-enactment from the officer on the court date as he gave evidence against the defendant.
"I detected it through my body armor," he said of the sandwich's impact, noting that an aromatic fragment hung from his police radio and sauce discolored his clothing.
The accused's lawyer, his legal representative, stated in her opening statement that hurling the deli product was a "non-threatening act that did not, could not, cause injury".
But government attorney the state's representative said the accused must be facing consequences.
"Whatever your status, you cannot simply hurling objects at others because you're angry," Mr Parron said.
After the alleged assault came to light, Mr Dunn was terminated from his position as a law firm employee in the government law department.
