Munich UAV Disruptions Contribute to the Continent’s Safety Worries

The Bavarian capital joins a rising group of European airfields affected by drone sightings in the past few days, including seventeen flight cancellations, fifteen rerouted, and many flyers facing delays to their travel last night.

Multiple witnesses claimed seeing UAVs close to the airfield, with a additional sighting subsequently verified within the protected airspace, forcing aviation authorities to stop flights pending review.

It is still uncertain the number of, or which models, unmanned aircraft were present.

The event occurs shortly prior to the last weekend of the annual beer festival beer festival, which had already seen issues earlier this week due to a bomb threat in the city.

The German air navigation service, the national aviation control body in charge of the country’s flight paths, reported in the past few days that drone sightings near airports are on the up, with 144 reported so far in 2025, as opposed to 113 in 2024, and 99 in the year before last.

Expect the sightings and the connected disruption to fuel the debate about the continent’s air defences, following the gathering of EU officials in the Danish capital showed varying opinions – mainly along regional divisions – about the freshly introduced “drone wall” plan.

It’s the third of October, 2025, and this is Europe Live.
