The Tragic Shift Just One Year Has Made in America

One year ago, the landscape was utterly distinct. Before the US presidential election, considerate residents could recognize America's significant faults – its unfairness and inequality – yet they continued to see it as the US. A democratic nation. A land where the rule of law carried weight. A country guided by a dignified and ethical public servant, even with his elderly years and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, this autumn, many of us barely recognize the country we reside in. People believed to be undocumented migrants are collected and shoved into vans, at times blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the White House – is undergoing demolition for an obscene ballroom. Donald Trump is targeting his political rivals or alleged foes and insisting federal prosecutors transfer an enormous amount of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are deployed into American cities under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, relabeled the War Department, has effectively liberated itself of routine media oversight while it uses what could amount to nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Colleges, legal practices, news companies are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are treated like members of the royal family.

“The United States, just months before its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has tipped over the brink into autocracy and fascism,” an American historian, wrote recently. “Finally, faster than I believed likely, it occurred in this country.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. And it's hard to comprehend – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone we are, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.

Yet, it is known that Trump was legitimately chosen. Even after his highly troubling initial presidency and following the cautions that came with the understanding of Project 2025 – even after the leader directly declared plainly he intended to act as an autocrat only on the first day – enough Americans selected him rather than the other candidate.

While alarming as the current reality are, it's more daunting to understand that we’re only several months into this administration. How will three more years of this deterioration leave us? And if the three years becomes something even longer, as there is nobody to restrain this leader from determining that a third term is required, possibly for national security reasons?

Certainly, there is still hope. There will be legislative votes in 2026 which might establish an alternate political equilibrium, if Democrats regain the Senate or House of parliament. There are elected officials who are attempting to exert some accountability, such as Democratic congressmen that are starting a probe concerning the try to money grab from the justice department.

And a leadership election in 2028 could begin our journey toward restoration just as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist millions of Americans protesting in urban areas across municipalities, like they performed last weekend during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the slumbering force of the US is awakening”, similar to past following the Red Scare in the 1950s or amid anti-war demonstrations or during the Nixon controversy.

During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance.

The author states he knows the signals of that awakening and observes it occurring currently. As support, he points to the widespread marches, the widespread, cross-party resistance regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to accept military mandates they report only authorized information.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists inactive till some venality turns extremely harmful, an specific act so contemptuous of the common good, certain violence so loud, that the giant is compelled except to rise.”

It's a positive outlook, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

In the meantime, the major inquiries remain: will the nation ever recover? Can it reclaim its status internationally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the historical project succeeded temporarily, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is true; that everything could be gone. My positive feelings, however, tells me that we need to strive, by any means possible.

Personally, as an observer of the press, that involves pushing media professionals to live up, more thoroughly, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it may be participating in congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to defend ballot privileges.

Under twelve months back, we lived in an alternate reality. Twelve months later? Or after another term? The truth is, we don’t know. The only option is to attempt to persevere.
